Introduction To England
In 1992 four friends visited the World Show in Valencia and saw Spanish Water Dogs both in the show ring and participating in an agility demonstration. They immediately recognised the enormous potential of these dogs both for training and as domestic pets.
They decided to research the breed, buy some excellent examples of the dogs and bring them back to England to establish a breeding programme here. The first two Spanish Water Dogs arrived in this country in October 1992 to be followed by two more in January 1993. The friends took considerable time and care in the breeding process in order to create natural, healthy dogs with excellent temperaments and a lively intelligence.
In 2000 their hard work and diligence paid off and the Kennel Club accepted the breed onto the Imported Register allowing the first Spanish Water Dogs to be shown at official dog shows.
Since then the gene pool has been expanded through careful importation of dogs from both Spain and Belgium, increasing the availability of Spanish Water Dogs while maintaining the high breed standards.
