The Characteristics
Spanish Water Dogs are a truly versatile breed. They are naturals at water sports and search and rescue, and are as capable of finding a missing person as they are of finding a ball.
They are extremely intelligent animals and can become wonderful and devoted family companions. Spanish Water Dogs have an intense desire to please their owners and this makes them quick learners and very dear and loyal friends. If properly introduced to children they will love them, and they also get on very well with other animals such as cats, rabbits and, of course, other dogs. In all aspects of life respect gains respect. A rude dog will not be accepted by a well mannered dog..........and will let them know!
Spanish Water Dogs love to play ball and hide and seek. They don’t need a huge garden to run around in, but they do need daily exercise, love and attention. If you live or walk near water it’s hard to keep them out of it!

The dogs have an inherent guarding instinct. They are wary of strangers and will let everyone in the house know that someone is approaching, but they are not excessive barkers. Spanish Water Dogs are great companions and they like to be close to their owners, rather than be left alone.
Each dog has its own unique and interesting character. Any Spanish Water Dog owner will agree that they are all different. Some dogs need a firm but gentle hand, but shouting and harsh treatment scares them and a Spanish Water Dog never forgets.
And at the end of the day, when they curl up with you at night, Spanish Water Dogs make great foot warmers at the end of the bed!
