The Revival Of The Breed
In 1975 two Spanish Water Dog enthusiasts, Antonio Garcia Perez and Santiago Montesinos decided to establish a breeding programme for this lovely dog. So they travelled around the countryside of Southern Spain, and through the remote villages and farms of the mountainous region of Andalucia, and bought or borrowed the best and most suitable dogs they could find.
In 1980 the Spanish Water Dog Club was established to promote the breed and help it gain recognition in its native country.
In 1985, after a lot of hard work and a great deal of time spent displaying the breed at various venues and dog shows, the Spanish Kennel Club accepted it and gave the Spanish Water Dog official recognition.
